1.Basics for Work! Keep good basics in your wardrobe that are truly timeless and will last the test of time and fashion trends. Key basics include black dress pants. Have about 3 good quality pairs. You will want at least one pair to have a pin stripe which will give your body some length and add variety, as well as one pair with a cuff on the bottom, and one without. All pairs should have a crease running down the leg for that dressy look. Avoid anything with pleats which is currently outdated and tends to make you appear larger in the frontal area anyhow. DO invest in good quality, but inexpensive tops such as short sleeved and ¾ length tops with Lycra (to keep their shape) in both v-neck and round neck styles. I recommend black, white and red, if you cannot wear red, perhaps gray. These are key for under blazers with pants and can also be worn with jeans on a casual Friday.

You will want 2 or 3 nice black skirts, a pencil skirt, or slight A-line, printed skirt and one that is more airy and fun. Dress shirts for women are more popular than ever. You will want to have some variety here. I recommend buying shirts that fit your shoulders and arm length properly and have a bit of Lycra or stretch fabric so you can move freely. These can be bought anywhere such as Winners, Ross for Less or department stores. Keep winter and summer colors. Important to any business wardrobe is the suit. You will need a black, navy and lighter color suit such as camel for summer. You can wear your blazer with your skirts too, no need to buy a skirt suit. When buying shoes keep the same in mind, find at least 3 comfortable pairs of shoes, perhaps a pair of flats, and 2 pairs of heels, one lower and the other a higher pump style. I don't believe in having all the colors of the rainbow on my shoe rack, especially when on a budget. Black and brown always work, throw in a pair of camel color for fun. The overall idea here is to have classic pieces that won't go out of style the last for years as to not constantly be buying clothes. I firmly believe in investing in these basic pieces so they'll last a long time. Look for sales, clearances and wander through thrift stores to find what you need to build your basic wardrobe.

2.Make Accessories Work for You! Whether they are shoes, sunglasses, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, belts, scarves, handbags or hairclips, find the ones that you love best and buy many at low cost shops. The key is to dress up a wardrobe many different ways without blowing your budget on pumps and expensive handbags. The best thing to do is buy all sorts of accessories for as little as you can. These keep your wardrobe interesting by adding color, texture, shape, and bling! A couple shops I love for this are Le Chateau, H&M and mall kiosks. I find the best inexpensive jewelry, trendy shoes and hair clips. Buy a bright orange or red handbag from Payless Shoe store for $20 and pump up your black suit for work, or jeans and a t-shirt. Hollywood stars use the same tricks just on a different budget.

The best tip is to wear a great outfit with one or two accessories maximum that pop! My mother used to dress extremely well because she picked out accessories and clothing that looked great but cost next to nothing. This is because she looked in stores like K-Mart as she couldn't afford designer or even mall store prices. Put on a Blazer and jeans with a pair of cute flats and have one significant piece like a great necklace to really make your neckline pop. When hair is done up, this is the best time to show off shoulders and your neckline, so draw attention with some great earrings and necklace. Even a funky watch can jazz up an otherwise low-key outfit.

3.Scarves are Your Best friend! Scarves have so many uses that it is hard not to have any in your wardrobe. Scarves can act as a tie around your hair in a ponytail, tied around your neck, used as a belt around your waist or simply ties to the shoulder strap of your handbag for a flirty look. It is good to have variety. Black and Red are my favorites however I have some softer colors such as pale pink and beige with light brown in full stripes, polka-dots are very in right now also. The scarf belt goes great with a sexy top and pair of jeans. When you are bored with the pattern or color switch them up with your friend's for variety.

4.Focus on your Face! Even if you don't feel like your wardrobe looks like a million bucks, put on a smile. It goes a long way and brightens your face! A little makeup really makes a difference. The 3 essentials I would recommend are Mascara, Lipstick (or a great gloss) and some blush. This will add color to your face and make your features pop. I have never bought into the notion that Designer expensive makeup is best. I've used Cover girl my whole life and have always had compliments. Their products are ¼ the price of department store and I can buy them anywhere. The key is to keep the makeup simple and light. Don't wear heavy foundation and loose powers with bright lipstick and heavy eyeliner. The key is to look natural and elegant with the right light shade of blush and lipstick and a black/brown or black shade of mascara. Spend less money on makeup but spend more time on mastering a natural look that is even.

5.Buy Quality Shoes that Last! Always buy quality shoes that can last you 2-3+ years. Ensure that they are a simple color and style, but more importantly that they have a good sole and heel lifts. Shoes aren't made the way they used to be. I find myself having to replace my lifts on most of my shoes since they are plastic. They wear down quickly causing potential accidents as you glide across floors in those heels. The shoe repair shop will put great quality lifts on and it is inexpensive. Replace these every year or as needed with wear so that the heels of your shoes stay looking new. In addition, shine your shoes regularly and buy scuff removing solution. A great pair of shoes can look like trash when they have not been taken care of.

If you really do crave something trendy then let it be for a particular outfit, or dress where the shoes will not be frequently worn. Why not get the knock-off style at Payless Shoe store or another discount shoe store? Then you'll get the style and price you want and don't have to worry so much about the durability.

6.No Tattered Undergarments! Many women focus on their outer wardrobe and forget what is hiding underneath. It is important to frequently wash your bras as well as camisoles etc on delicate cycle. It is very unappealing to see a well dressed woman with a tattered, dirty bra strap peeking out of her top. Likewise, underwear and socks need to be replaced when stained or tattered having holes or elastic coming apart. This is not sexy for your partner or for yourself! I typically buy a bunch of inexpensive clearance rack panties that look like designer knock-offs with all the lacy styles. I usually pay around $2-$5 per pair and they look great! If they get ruined in my washing machine or wear with time I can just toss them without thinking twice. While we are on the subject, ladies do buy bras that fit your cup properly and are seamless. There is nothing worse than a great blouse with seam lines or nipples showing!

7.Accessorize but don't overdo it! Classy women look classy because they don't overdo it. Wearing a great dress or outfit with a single ring, pair of small earrings and a small necklace is fine. Wearing a suit with a ring on every finger, watch, bracelet, heavy makeup, hair in an elaborate clip, a belt, a scarf around the neck and bright shoes is overkill. Nobody knows what to look at first! When you get ready to leave the house, look into a full length mirror with your entire outfit including a hat or handbag if included. You will often slowly start to strip a couple accessories away or tone down bold shoes and handbags. Remember, simple is best. Add one or two killer pieces that will have you feeling great and getting compliments along the way.

8.Don't be Afraid to Shop in Thrift Stores! I can't tell you how many things I've been able to snag there. The key is to go into an area that is more well-to-do or exclusive. Often people with a lot of money can discard things faster for new items such as great sweaters, blazers, handbags, you name it! My last purchase there was actually a set of hot rollers that retail at $70 that I picked up for $16! I bought an $80 pair of great brown boots that were never worn for $6!! I'll admit, you have to make some time to sift through a lot of duds till you find a few keepers, but it is well worth it. Buy items that have their original bold color, no fading! Make sure there are no holes, or stains. If there is a small area that is inconspicuous, by all means grab the item if you can fix it. You can also find some fun handbags, belts and jewelry.

9.Wear clothes that Fit You! There is nothing worse than seeing a beautiful woman in skin tight dress pants, breasts hanging out, and the visible appearance of flab around the waist or back due to tight clothing. Looking slimmer is not about wearing more fitted clothing, clothing with breathing room and comfort will not only make you look better but feel better too. Classy women don't let it all hang out! If something in your wardrobe is too small but you love it, keep it until it does fit (maybe use it as motivation) and find something new.

10.You don't Need Brand Names to Look Good. Today with so many great knock-offs and fun styles to choose from, there is no need to spend $450 on a pair of designer sunglasses. I have a $17 pair of Gucci knocks-offs that I bought in the airport, and have got more compliments on those than a real pair of Ralph Lauren shades. Likewise, people see how well your outfit is put together more so than they do what brand you are wearing. I see a lot of wealthy people wearing brand name overkill and they don't look classy, they look tacky. Don't be a walking billboard for a brand name, just be an original and wear what fits you and what you feel good in.

This article was inspired by many women that I have worked with, spent time with, seen walking the streets, and those that have told me that they simply don't have the money to dress well. If my mom in her early thirties could dress classy in K-Mart clothing and get compliments, you can too! You need an objective eye and patience to find what looks great on you. So, give your charge card a break and find out how fun it is to buy a few items with a $20 bill!

CreateFashion Industry: Ready To Face The Future

The fashion industry is very complicated. There are no standard fashion companies. They come from a wide spectrum of enterprises working in the apparel, footwear, home textiles and accessories markets. The industry is made up of various kinds of companies like retailers, design source and selling companies, companies with their own manufacturing facilities and other companies who outsource production but retain control over parts of the production process.

Moreover, companies functioning in the high fashion segment often face a different kind of pressure as compared to those functioning with commodity fashion goods.

All of these aspects combine to make the fashion industry one of the most complicated industry. Yet, various issues can be noticeably recognized as common across the industry.

. Consumers have the power
. Supply chains are complicated
. Product launching and delivery takes time
. Companies must be able to manage a product mix
. Inventory control maintenance is important
. Impact of the latest technology on the fashion industry
. Copyright issues for fashion designs Consumers have more power

Today's buyers have more purchasing power then ever before and are less tolerant due to increased time pressure in today's lifestyles.

They are more aware about environmental and human rights issues and have superior quality demands. They demand a huge variety and more frequent changes in the choices available to them. Moreover, they also expect immediate availability of perfect matching set of garments and accessories in their preferred color and size combinations in the same store.

Wallet: Your Proud Little Possession

In a normal case, wallet means small pocket sized case made of leather, with a couple or more of compartments for convenient holding of paper cash and papers, credit cards, driver’s license and the like. Wallets are very handy to organize several smaller things of everyday importance. Not just that; if you are looking at having some vanity, just go ahead and buy a leather wallet you like. Even though wallet is predominantly connected with men, women are not totally out of wallet fashion; but of course women’s wallets are different in their appearance and they are fit called as hand bags complete with larger size and handles.

A Bit of History

Wallet was an immediate necessity with men as soon as paper currency was introduced in the 17th century. Before that, what are known as pull-string purses were in use which was more than convenient for storing coins (there were no paper cash and business and credit cards to store at all). The first wallets were made of stronger of the leathers, cow leather, with a simple additional compartment for storing coins separately. But it is not completely known whether they looked like the modern wallets or whether they had the folding style like we have today.

Fashionable Wallets

Wallets of the present day are no more just the cash holders of the yester era. A visit to a leather goods shop alone can bowl you over by the variety. They are made mostly from cow and sheep leather even though wallets of unusual materials like fabrics, duct tapes, PU etc are available.

Although men’s wallets are usually in sizes that fit their pockets, the choice of design is in their color, the softness factor and utility. They are available in different shades of black and brown. You can have wallets for storing calling cards, credit cards and paper cash. You can buy one with a strong money clip to hold upto 10-15 bills securely.

Gift a Wallet

Receiving wallets as gifts has never been a disappointing moment. Exquisite colored, initial embossed in gold multi-pouched wallets are accepted with appreciation. You can add value by choosing one with a calendar, or an address book.

Did you know of beeping wallets which go beeping no sooner than you remove credit cards? Beeping goes on for 20 seconds or till you replaced the card and are operate by a microchip and are designed to remind people who forget their cards at ATM and stores.

Additional varieties of wallets are check-book cover, passport wallet and tabbed wallets with pen holder. Beware of pickpockets when keeping personal identity papers or use a money belt when the occasion permits.

Sexy Prom Dresses Let You Have It Your Way

Designing your own prom dress can be an exciting experience! This article is going to give you some great tips so you too can be a showpiece at your prom! When you design your own prom dress there is no greater joy than wearing your own creation, and you're also going to enjoy numerous glances filled with admiration. You can make sexy prom dresses and you don't need a degree in fashion to be able to do it. Do you have the courage to be creative and innovative? You'll also need to believe that you can create the best possible for yourself. When it comes to the prom, there's probably no other occasion that focuses on the importance of a dress more. Don't be shy, but remember to always seek advice from the experts who should include your local designer, older siblings, parents, or basically someone who is knowledgeable with materials and fabrics. If you're looking for some guidelines to follow, read these carefully before you attempt to design your own dress.

· Make a list, along with a sketch of the accessories you're going to need, including purse, jewelry, footwear etc.

· Take a pad of paper and pencil and sketch the designs you have in mind. Keeping in mind every detail that comes across your mental picture of the dress you want to wear on prom night and how you would design your own prom dress.

· Pickup catalogs and visit various brick-and-mortar stores as well as internet web sites until you've exhausted all of the resources for creating your imagined designs.

· After you have sketched sexy prom dresses until you can't sketch anymore, and there don't seem to be any more ideas coming forth, put them aside for a few days and ponder on them.

· Go back and look at them a few days to a week later and pick out the ones that you like the most and you definitely want to wear to the prom.

· Remember to get the opinions of others by showing them your favorite dress designs and ask them to rank from top to bottom. You may have a pleasant surprise in store as they even may pick the one that you have in mind.

· After you've selected the one you want, visit your tailor and show him or her the sketch, pick out your fabric, and remember to have them measure you carefully so you don't over-purchase fabric. It can be expensive. Always be open to their professional opinion to improvise on your pattern, if necessary.

Fashion Icons In The Early Seventies

One of the most talented fashion designers in the early Seventies was Ossie Clark, who had first made his sartorial mark in the previous decade. Celia Birtwell, his then wife designed all the individual prints for his well-cut clothes, which were guaranteed to make any woman look svelte and glamorous. (Celia now designs clothes with her archives prints for Top Shop). Ossie's fashion shows were held in theatrical venues like the Royal Court Theatre, where all of fashionable London would 'see and be seen'. Ossie had a loyal stable of exotic models, one of whom was Amanda Lear. Rumour had it she was a transsexual – people say she invented that rumour to make herself appear even more interesting than she already was. She was an inspiration for "Frantic", my novel set in the early Seventies. ‘Then the first mannequin, a convincing sex change stalked the spot lit catwalk, proudly draped in a Cedrick bow which seemed bigger than the Eiffel Tower. The bow was so enormous, that all could be seen of the mannequin was a pair of pink lips. However, when the creature swished around, wiggling its spine at the audience, fashion Industry pundits were delighted to see clusters of lip shaped bows cascading down onto the floor in one full, Mermaid tail swoop.’

Amanda Lear had a colourful CV, which included a stint as a one-time muse to Salvador Dali. In the later Seventies, she metamorphosed into an international disco queen, and got married too. Before then, I couldn’t resist playing a trick on Amanda, and invented a character called Jet Spray Cooler in my column. Evelyn Waugh’s ‘Vile Bodies’ inspired me to become a gossip columnist after I first read it. I loved the bit about 'Mr Chatterbox' inventing a green bowler as the latest fashion accessory in his column. Following his example, I repeatedly wrote that the fictitious Jet Spray was Amanda’s biggest admirer and was desperate to meet her. Amanda wanted to know who this Jet Spray Cooler character was? I invented a wild story, telling her he was a rock ‘n’ roll superstar. ‘If he’s a superstar, why haven’t I heard of him, darling?” Amanda wanted to know. ‘He’s only famous in LA,’ I fibbed.

Tretorn Sneakers - A Swedish Special

The Tretorn company was established in Sweden in the 1800's, and the influence of Scandinavia is evident in every Tretorn product, including Tretorn sneakers.

Tretorn sneakers are a part of the Gullwing line of footwear, and after just a bit of research, you'll find that a shoe by Tretorn is a unique shoe indeed! If you want a sneaker that stands out from the rest, then Tretorn sneakers are a smart buy.

Tretorn sneakers look nothing like brand-name sneakers from the United States. The styles are interesting and the color combinations unlike much that you'll see on a shelf at a local shoe store. If you're looking for a pair of sneakers that are not only comfortable and supportive but also quite fashionable, than why not give a pair of yellow or red Tretorn sneakers a try? Some Tretorn sneakers are more conventional-looking than others, but some are extra cool looking. And it's not a piece of cake to make a sneaker look original!

But it's really not all that surprising that Tretorn sneakers are so special. If you want a sneaker that not only fits right, but is different than every other shoe you see, then why not look to a company whose design is inspired by the styles and trends of Sweden?

Sneakers, after all, have a reputation of being modest and plain and the ones that do have some style don't really seem all that different from brand to brand. But this is not the case with Tretorn sneakers.

The style of a Tretorn sneaker is not ostentatious, as you might expect, however. It is simple and casual, just with an added flair that many American-brand shoes simply don't have! So when you go shopping around for a set of Tretorn sneakers, you'll discover an exciting variety of styles, colors, and patterns! Do you want a cool, elegant look or something quirkier? It's up to you.

The Multiple Faces of Keychain

The Multiple Faces of KeycIf keys open the doors to all things that are rich and beautiful in this world, then it is not the keys but the key chains that are most powerful things of this world, for they bind the keys together. Traditional key chains are known for their exquisite craftsmanship in gold and silver while their cousins of the present era are the little marvels of technology.

The utilities of key chains limit them to indoors in large offices for obligatory reasons. Those carrying a handful of keys can also be called as key bunches. The relevance of functional key chains has been a bit reduced with the advent of modern, high security magnetic and electronic swipe cards, which are used increasingly everywhere. These card keys are conveniently hung from the neck or kept in the wallets as they double up as ID cards too.

Key chain uses

Gone are the days when these were the items of bunching keys together. Take a look at what innovative uses are found out for key chains of late.

1. Status symbols: Silver and gold key chains made either plain or by artistically crafting are a matter of status symbol in certain circles. People pride sporting them in parties and social events.

2. ID cards: Large corporations digitalize employee information on their ID cards, which serve as door openers when swiped in the slots. These type of specialized card are normally for security purposes. These key chains/ID cards are usually hung around the neck by the employees.

3. Flash and UV light: These type of key chains a re nickel-cadmium battery operated and have small flashlight basically to locate the keyhole. UV light chains are used for detecting hidden marks made by invisible ink. Examples are currency notes and secret messages passed between detectives.

4. Souvenirs and gifts: Key chains engraved or embossed to mark the occasion of some seminar or college event are proudly distributed as souvenirs by the hosts. Or you can pick a typical one on your holiday to Caribbean islands.

5. Sundry chains: You can have Champagne opener screws, fruit knives, and nail cutters for key chains.

Artistry

Although small in sizes key chains are strong enough to bowl you over by their sheer beauty, funny key chains in acrylic or metals, key chains of comic and popular figures are pieces of artistry.hain

The Thrills and Chills of My Shoe Rack... No Really

Do you own a lot of shoes? Well, I certainly have a lot of them. In fact, I have more than enough shoes than I need, and my husband often reminds me of this every day. The problem is that I don’t know where to put my shoes. As a result, someone would often trip over them in the middle of the night. It’s not that I’m lazy, it’s just that there are so many of them. I think that my shoes have started a union and have decided to take over the household. They may be bringing outside help because I don’t even remember buying some of them. I suspect that they are organized, and are preparing to attack. They situate themselves on the middle of the floor on purpose so that someone will get hurt. I’ve even tried to use a shoe rack to keep them in check, but that plan did not work.

The first shoe rack that I tried was a rather short set of shelves. I purchased it because it said shoe rack on the box. I was tired of hearing the complaints from my husband, and he wasn’t buying my mutiny story. So, I dutifully put some of my shoes on the rack, and put others that I don’t wear very often in the closet. However, the shoes were scattered around the house again by the end of the week. Only one pair was left on the shoe rack, and they weren’t even my shoes. This experience convinced me further that there were outside forces at work in my house.

I had to buy yet another shoe rack because the first one soon became a place for toys. The second shoe rack I purchased hung from the back of my closet door. I thought that it will work, because all the shoes were confined to the closet. However, I failed to realize was that the pair of shoes I left by the door had other plans. I don’t really know, but perhaps they let the other shoes out because they all managed to escape the shoe rack. My husband said that he will commit me to the local mental institution if I blame it on the shoes one more time.

I soon learned to live with my messy shoe habits. Of course, I know that the shoes aren’t really conspiring against me, and I know I’m the one responsible for leaving them lying around. But, I’m not going to admit it to him because I can do what I please until he cleans up his act. The shoe rack in the closet still holds two pairs of shoes, but they are shoes I never wear. Scrapbook supplies now fill the rest of the pockets. Well, at least it’s good for something.

Sexy is, as Sexy Does

We sell womens sexy lingerie and clubwear. A friend of mine was going through our web site the other day, and asked me this question “Why do you guys say sexy and hot with the plus sized stuff ?” My friend just fell off my cool list. I thought my friend was cool, but, if he does not know the essence of sexy, then he can not be cool. Sexy is as sexy does! Sexy is not about being the perfect size. Sexy is not about being a supermodel. Sexy is not about showing skin. Sexy is the combination of many elements that come together. Sexy lingerie and clubwear are about accentuating those elements, no matter what size or shape the wearer is. I know the media still pushes thin. That's because, it's what they THINK, we want. They don't know that plump can be sexy.

Women come in many sizes and shapes. All women are not sexy. All women can be sexy. The first step to any woman being sexy is, she must KNOW she is sexy. Knowing you are sexy is the base, the foundation, of the attitude that creates sex appeal. This is true for men and women. Self confidence is a very large part of sexiness.

Conduct is the next element in true sex appeal. Hold yourself up. Behave in a sexy manner. Be sexy. This does not mean be a floozy (polite term). Being easy, and sleazy, is not sexy. In fact, one of the elements of sexiness is mystery. Read my article on M.E.T (Mystery, Excitement, and Tease). IT is about giving yourself the presence of sex appeal.

Mae West was one of the most sensual women that ever lived. She was not some toothpick walking down a runway. Her sexiness oozed out of every poor in her body. She used her eyes, and facial expressions. She used her voice, and body language, to convey her sexual presence. She knew how to use her strengths, and hide her weaknesses. Mae West was a plump gal, especially by the time she did “Little Chickadee” and she had men drooling for her. She used her personality traits in a sexual manner. She acted sexy, she believed she was sexy, and therefore she was sexy. Even her wit was a sex appeal. Sexy is as sexy does. Marilyn Monroe was another great example of sexy presence, also not a size 2. I have heard women say, “Oh, I can't wear that, I haven't the body for it.”. If that is how you feel, then you are correct. If you look at it and think, “He is going to want to lick my high heels when he sees me in this.”. Then you have the essence of sexiness.

We have all seen women throwing skimpy clothing on, that is two sizes, too small. That is not sexy. That is a gross misuse of sexy clothing. Sexy lingerie and clubwear are tools that a sexy woman uses to her advantage. Throwing something on just to show skin, is like using a screwdriver as a hammer, you might get the nail in, but, your going to have to work a lot harder at it. To quote Mae West, “I like my clothes to be tight enough to show I'm a woman... but loose enough to show I'm a lady.”.

You need to be aware of what your strengths are, and accentuate them. You must be aware of what your weaknesses are, and now how to cloak them. Mae West understood this, and used her wardrobe as tools to enhance her sex appeal, not create it. Another Mae West quote was “You can say what you like about long dresses, but they cover a multitude of shins.”. Your strengths are going to be as individualized as you are. There have many many sex symbols throughout history, and the came in all sizes and shapes. Anna Nicole Smith (in all her sizes), Zsa Zsa Gabor, Delta Burke, Queen Latifah, and Cleopatra (was plumper than the movies ever showed) just to name a few off the top of my head.

My Ebony fashion fair lady: fashion icon Eunice W. Johnson takes beauty and style to millions

EUNICE Walker Johnson has always been a woman ahead of her time, and her life and work continue to be defined by her contributions to the world of fashion and design, as well as her contributions to helping to build Johnson Publishing Company into a media and beauty powerhouse.
Under Mrs. Johnson's direction, Ebony Fashion Fair continues to be the most exciting and most colorful traveling fashion extravaganza in the world. For more than four decades, the show has been taking its million-dollar collection of designer fashions to predominantly Black audiences around the world.
In the process, Mrs. Johnson and Ebony Fashion Fair have helped redefine Black beauty and pave the way for supermodels such as Liya Kebede, Tyra Banks, Naomi Campbell, Iman and Beverly Johnson.
Sponsored locally by organizations such as the Urban League, UNCF, NAACP, and numerous chapters of Black sororities, including Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta, the show has raised more than $53 million for charitable causes since its inception.
During the 48th season, the show will make stops in almost 200 cities in the U.S., Canada and the Bahamas. Over the years, Mrs. Johnson and the show have had quite an impact on the fashion world by demonstrating that bright and brilliant colors look great on bronze-skinned models, and that Black women, regardless of income and background, have an innate sense of style and beauty.
The Ebony Fashion Fair show was conceived in 1956 when Jessie C. Dent, wife of then-president of Dillard University, asked EBONY's late publisher John H. Johnson to sponsor a fund-raiser for the Women's Auxiliary of Flint-Goodrich Hospital in New Orleans. The fashion show was such a success that it was decided to take it on a cross-country tour to benefit other charities.
In 1958, the late Freda DeKnight, then EBONY's food and fashion editor, was asked to organize the first tour, which was presented in 10 cities. DeKnight was also the show's first commentator. Mrs. Johnson began producing the show in 1963, and it rapidly became the most talked-about fashion event across the U.S. Among the elements that set this show apart is that Ebony Fashion Fair Producer/Director Johnson visited prestigious couture houses in Europe and the U.S. to personally select the 200 ensembles featured in the show.
Considered among the world's best-dressed women and a style expert, Mrs. Johnson preferred garments that would entertain as well as enlighten the show's audiences.
Even as a youngster growing up in Selma, Ala., Mrs. Johnson was fascinated by stylish, well-made clothing. At a young age she demonstrated talent as she made clothing for her dolls. As a teen, she made clothing for family members, including shirts for her father, Dr. Nathaniel D. Walker, who practiced medicine for more than 50 years. "My father used to like to show off the shirts I made for him," recalls Mrs. Johnson. "I made those collars that stood up, and worked those button holes by hand. It's amazing how praise can make you feel so good."
Mrs. Johnson earned her high school degree and certificates in sewing and tailoring at the high school at Selma University, which was founded by her maternal grandfather, Dr. William H. McAlpine, the school's second president who also was founder and first president of the National Baptist Convention USA. Mrs. Johnson's mother, Ethel McAlpine Walker, was the high school's principal and also taught college courses at Selma University.
Mrs. Johnson earned a degree in sociology, with a minor in art, from Talladega College in Alabama, and she earned a master's degree in social work from Loyola University in Chicago.
In Chicago, she met John H. Johnson at a social event, and the two were married in June 1941. The young couple spent their honeymoon driving back to Chicago from Alabama and visiting friends. Mrs. Johnson worked with her husband as he founded Negro Digest in 1942 and EBONY in 1945. In fact, it was Mrs. Johnson who suggested the name EBONY, which means fine black African wood. It also was Mrs. Johnson who found the locations for each of the company's headquarters, including the lot on South Michigan Avenue where she and her husband built the current headquarters for Johnson Publishing Co. Because it was difficult to find makeup suitable for the many shades of Black skin, Mrs. Johnson also inspired the founding of Fashion Fair Cosmetics in 1973.
During the early years of the Ebony Fashion Fair show, some designers refused to sell their garments to Mrs. Johnson, but she persisted. As she became well-known in the fashion capitals, the designers began to look forward to visits from the stylish woman who often was accompanied by beautiful models. Over the years, Mrs. Johnson became well acquainted with Yves Saint Laurent and other well-known designers. After viewing thousands of garments, each year she selects just the right mix of evening gowns, cocktail dresses, casual attire, swimwear and stylish suits to keep Ebony Fashion Fair audiences applauding and returning year after year.

Fashion with a Cause, 7 Brands That Make a Difference

The world of fashion has avoided getting involved in causes, activism, however, is “in” with superstars like Bono leading the charge. He says "We have got to find ways of making our activism sexy, and fashion is it."

1. Lee Jeans sponsors Lee National Denim Day, the largest single day fund raiser for the Women’s Cancer Programs of the EFI.
2. Citizens of Humanity donates a portion of every jean sale to Conservation International to help preserve the earth’s natural heritage.
3. Levi’s will jump into the cause in November 2006 with a new organic line of jeans call Levi’s Eco. It will feature recycled buttons, zippers, and natural colored stitching.
4. Edun Jeans, started by Rock Star Bono and his wife, are made of organic cotton and assembled in fair trade factories.
5. Loomstate was one of the first denim brands to use only organic cotton. They support organic farming and a sustainable future.
6. (Project)Red, a new eco clothing line includes styles form several top brands, including gap jeans. Profits go to the fight against diseases in third world countries.
7. Del Forte Denim, new to the premium denim scene, is just getting recognized for their use of organic cotton and supporting sustainable farming practices.

Here is a little bit about each of these causes and why they are so important:

Organic Cotton:
Why is Organic Cotton important? If you are like me, socially aware, but slightly cheap, you may not readily recognize the value of organic clothing. Organic food makes sense, we eat that stuff and we don’t want those chemicals in our bodies. But Cotton? That’s something we wear not ingest. What I didn’t realize was that the value of organic cotton is not about direct contact, like food, but is about the direct impact on the environment, (which is direct contact, but ….uh, indirectly). Organic cotton does not use pesticides and the land is renewed by rotating crops, leaving a much smaller environmental footprint.
Some interesting facts:
• 10% of all pesticides in the U.S. are sold for use on cotton crops
• 7 of the top 15 pesticides used on cotton are classified by the EPA as “possible”, ”likely”, “probable”, or “known” human carcinogens
• It takes 2/3 a pound of pesticides to make one pair of jeans

How to Choose the Best Jean Pocket Design for you

How can you tell Joe’s from Jag or Guess from Gap? Look at the pocket design! The premium jeans craze has brought with it a universal back pocket obsession. For some, being able to identify a designer brand by the back pocket has become a consuming pastime (although I suspect my boyfriend has ulterior motives). Every brand has their signature stitch, color, shape or design. Besides flaunting your exquisite good taste, what do back pockets do for you? You know if they look fab or frumpy, we’ll tell you why.

Gone are the days when the back pocket was purely a utilitarian feature. With the care and craftsmanship that goes into today’s denim pocket designs, it is sacrilegious to even use them. No matter how appealing they are on a hanger, the true test of any pocket is how it looks on your butt. Not every design is for every body, we’ll help you find what will work for you.

Embellished jean pockets:
Fun and attention grabbing embellishments abound on these jean pockets and they really punch up the WOW factor on a pair of jeans. Intricate embroidery, multi-colored stitching, and fabric insets are all designed to focus attention on your assets. They do a great job, adding dimension and interest to your seat. While this is perfect for flat seats, making them appear fuller and rounder, it can be too much added bulk for full seats.

Nice Butt! Our Guide to Jeans Pocket Placement

You know the drill, take a stack of the cutest jeans into the fitting room, gingerly pull one on, and turn to the mirror for a quick butt check. They feel great and they mold to your every curve but they make your butt look….well, not exactly fabulous. Disappointment settles in. Do you start the whole process all over again or do you buy these jeans anyway and hope no one will notice?

Although great fit is essential, it’s no guarantee of a fabulous rear view. As enticing as those back pockets looked on the rack, whether they’ll enhance your butt depends on the shape of the back yoke, the pocket size, and the pocket placement.

There are two simple rules to follow for the best rear view:
1. Keep pockets in proportion to your size as well as to the style of the jean.
2. Look for angles, they will flatter your shape and enhance your curves.

Because placement varies so much between high rise and low rise jeans, there are guidelines for each. Every brand has a pocket personality, once you find the one that matches your needs, you won’t go wrong.

For high rise jeans:
• An angled back yoke will give a rounder look to your seat and accentuate a smaller waist.
• Look for pockets that are set at a slight inward angle, they will give you a shapely look and add the illusion of lift to your butt.
• Pockets should be fairly centered on the fullest part of your cheeks to maintain good style proportions.
• Stay away from pockets that are set too high, they will make your seat look longer and bigger.
• Look at the space between the bottom corners of the pockets, the wider the space, the wider your seat will look.

For low rise jeans:

• A bit of an inward angle on the pocket setting is great for enhancing curves.
• Pockets set straight across, combined with a straight back yoke, will give you a “square pants” look that you can do without.
• Don’t let low pockets get you down. If they end below your seat on the back of your thigh, your jean will feel uncomfortable and look sloppy.

The Skinny Jean: A Brief History

Skinny Jeans, whether you love them or loathe them, they’re everywhere. But where did they come from?

1950s and 1960s fashion:
Jeans became the symbol of rebellion and passionate youth worn by the sex symbols of the day. James Dean, Marlon Brando, and Elvis wore their jeans straight and slim. Although women in the 50’s didn’t often wear jeans; Audrey Hepburn, Sandra Dee, and Marilyn Monroe wore the 50’s fashion of slim, close fitting pants that had the same sexy silhouette as today’s skinnies. By the 60’s women’s jeans were more common (even though the zipper was in the back) and they continued to have that skinny silhouette. The look could be super sweet like the girl next door, or sexy and rebellious like those greaser chics in the musical and movie of the same name. Rock and Roll was coming of age and tight jeans were the uniform.

1970s Fashion
The essence of Rock and Roll stays strong in skinny jeans despite the fluff and flash of the Disco era. When we think of 70’s fashion, we think of elephant bells and groovy flare jeans; but dig a little deeper and you’ll find the beginnings of the punk movement and the skinniest jeans in history. Tight from the waist to the ankle, safety pins were often used to keep them snug around the body and increase that bondage appeal. Think of The Sex Pistols and The Ramones as prime examples. Vivian Westwood had her own shop selling this “anti-fashion” to the ultra hip crowd.
